Learning Exams

A comprehensive eye exam will help to assess ocular health and rule out pathology in addition to checking the vision. The American Optometrist Association recommendation for comprehensive eye examinations is as follows:

  • 6 months to 1 year
  • 3 years of age
  • 5 years of age
  • Every year thereafter

A learning exam is recommended to assess functional vision and visual perceptual skills.

There are many skills necessary to provide clear and comfortable vision which is important for efficient reading and learning. Visual processing is how the brain processes and interprets visual information. This type of exam is particularly important for children who are struggling with learning-related issues, or for individuals who experience difficulty with tasks that require good visual processing, like reading, writing, or spatial awareness.

Functional vision skills include:

  • Binocularity (eye teaming)
  • Accommodation (eye focusing)
  • Oculomotor skills (eye tracking)

Visual perceptual skills include:

  • Laterality/directionality
  • Visual-motor integration
  • Visual discrimination
  • Visual memory
  • Visual spatial relationships
  • Visual figure ground
  • Visual sequential memory
  • Visual closure

Following our complete learning exam, there will be a determination made on treatment (vision therapy/glasses) and you will be provided with a complete report of the testing with any suggested accommodations for school.
